“Jewel Box” Sunken Terrace Design Goal: Provide a private, outdoor extension of renovated, early 19th century barn master bedroom and bath. Blurring the lines between the new master suite and sunken terrace, French doors open to large cut stone steps, replacing temporary wooden steps, and providing additional seating. Preparation included transplanting out existing shrubs and perennials, excavating several feet below grade for more privacy, and running electricity for fountain. Repurposed materials were used for brick floor and fountain, giving a sense of history to this faux barn cellar hole. From morning coffee to evening cocktails and moon gazing, the 5’ walls of the sunken terrace offer the perfect sanctuary.
